Update: Stop the Eviction of El Cambalache
Dear Community,
We hope you are doing well. Over the past two and a half weeks we have learned a lot at El Cambalache. First, we would like to share with you the good news. Yesterday we reached our first small benchmark in the campaign of $10,000 US dollars with 128 donors. This is important because when we decided to fundraise to buy our home and avoid eviction we also decided not to run our workshops on decolonial economic methods in research and practices. These workshops usually fund our stipends, rent and utilities. Meeting this benchmark means that we have almost fundraised enough money to sustain the project for another six months- this year, with costs for everything going up we will need $13,000 to fully cover the basic costs of running the project through December. However, our first real goal for keeping our home is to raise $50,000 so that we can make a down payment on the house.
We haven’t heard from our landlords yet and so our future remains uncertain. We hope that their silence means that we can stay in the space without conflict until the end of the year. However, this uncertainty makes us and our community nervous. With prices going up on everything people need El Cambalache more than ever. In our city, San Cristobal de las Casas, there has been flooding and people need help. In the rural areas of Chiapas there is more violence everyday and people are being displaced from their land and homes. El Cambalache has been a space of solace for so many people over the past seven years; a place where one can come and find the things, community, knowledge and mutual aid that they need when they are in the daily crisis of living through capitalism and coloniality or extraordinary crises of violence, illness and natural disasters.

We are located in a place where capitalism, coloniality and modernity has deemed that people have low access to money. Now, the little money we had is worth even less and stress is high. There is more violence everyday. A week ago today people were shooting guns into the air in front of El Cambalache at 3am. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Actualización: No Permitas que Desalojen El Cambalache
Querida comunidad,
Esperamos que estén bien. Durante las últimas dos semanas y media hemos aprendido mucho en El Cambalache. En primer lugar, nos gustaría compartir con ustedes las buenas noticias. Ayer alcanzamos nuestro primer pequeño logro en la campaña de 10.000 dólares estadounidenses con 128 donantes. Esto es importante porque cuando decidimos recaudar fondos para comprar nuestra casa y evitar el desalojo también decidimos no realizar nuestros talleres sobre métodos y prácticas decoloniales de investigación. Estos talleres suelen financiar nuestras becas, el alquiler y los servicios públicos. Alcanzar este punto de referencia significa que casi hemos recaudado suficiente dinero para mantener el proyecto durante otros seis meses; este año, con el aumento de los costos de todo, necesitaremos 13.000 dólares para cubrir totalmente los costes básicos de funcionamiento del proyecto hasta diciembre. Sin embargo, nuestro primer objetivo real para mantener nuestra casa es recaudar 50.000 dólares para poder hacer un pago inicial de la casa.
Todavía no tenemos noticias de nuestros caseros, por lo que nuestro futuro sigue siendo incierto. Esperamos que su silencio signifique que podemos permanecer en el espacio sin conflictos hasta finales de año. Sin embargo, esta incertidumbre nos pone nerviosos a nosotras y a nuestra comunidad. Con la subida de los precios de todo, la gente necesita El Cambalache más que nunca. En nuestra ciudad, San Cristóbal de las Casas, ha habido inundaciones y la gente necesita ayuda. En las zonas rurales de Chiapas hay más violencia cada día y la gente está siendo desplazada de sus tierras y hogares. El Cambalache ha sido un espacio de consuelo para muchas personas en los últimos siete años; un lugar donde se puede venir y encontrar cosas, la comunidad, el conocimiento y la ayuda mutua que necesitan cuando están en la crisis diaria de vivir a través del capitalismo y la colonialidad o las crisis extraordinarias de la violencia, la enfermedad y los desastres naturales.

Nos encontramos en un lugar donde el capitalismo, la colonialidad y la modernidad han determinado que la gente tenga poco acceso al dinero.
